The Newcomer Club offers activities that bring together people with similar interests. Most groups meet on a monthly basis or as determined by the group. Times and locations are announced in the newsletter or at the monthly general meetings.

CHICK FLICKS -- Meets the 4th Tuesday of the month for lunch followed by a movie that we could NEVER drag the guys to. Join us if you are interested in a fun outing with the chicks. Sandie Mettlach (972-0700)

Classic CarS -- The Oconee Classic Car Club is an ad hoc group of enthusiasts who primarily enjoy unmodified, true classic cars.  We have no particular agenda, monthly meetings or annual dues. We do have, however, a get-together in Spring, and an annual picnic in Fall, and a holiday party early in January. These events have proven to be popular, combining auto-related conversation, good food and a trivia contest. Also, the group attempts to get together, as time permits with busy schedules, for short road trips to auto-related places, such as car museums and include a lunch stop. You do not need to own a classic car, just an interest in “old iron.” Initial meeting is scheduled for September 13 for a picnic at Biggerstaff Christian Retreat. Contact John Hawbecker (944-8373)

Hiking I (“TUESDAY HIKERS”) -- for those interested in moderate-to-difficult day hikes. Wear good boots or walking shoes.  Bring your lunch, drinking water and rain gear. Contact Bill and Carolyn Palmer (944-1182)

When/Where: Every Tuesday (October through May). Unless otherwise announced, hikers gather, car pool and depart at 8:30 AM from the Keowee Key parking area, on SC 130, 0.2 miles north of the SC 183 intersection. The group proceeds to the Werthers Auction parking lot across from the Steak House Cafeteria on SC 28 in Walhalla. There the group is joined by additional hikers who have assembled there. Plans for the day’s hike and driving directions to the trail head are reconfirmed and all head out at 9:00 AM.

Format: Again this year we will plan most of our hikes and send out advance notice of the upcoming hike via e-mail.  With planned, pre-announced hikes, it gives us the opportunity to vary the meeting places depending on the hike.  Planned hikes also allow those folks that can't or do not wish to attempt more aggressive hikes to bypass them. Our weekly group can range in number from 10 to 35.

Hikes: Well-defined trails in local parks and forests in South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina.  The usual hike length in 3 to 4 hours, including a lunch stop. We are normally home by 2:00 or 3:00 PM.

HIKING II (“FRIDAY HIKERS”) -- Enjoy a walk in the woods, visit a foothills waterfall. Friday Hikers takes easy-to-moderate trails (2-3 miles) starting September 12, then every other Friday through May. If you like to walk and talk, this is a great way to meet other newcomers, and pick up some tips and info about life in the Golden Corner. Contact John Bolling (882-6618), Jim Bolling (985-1168) or email ncoffridayhikers@gmail.com

History -- Meets the 2nd Wednesday (September through May) at noon.  This has worked well in the past. We’ll continue as long as we can make arrangements for Wednesday to visit sites. Contact Gretchen Masselli (718-0253)
